Two Bit
While he may be timid when you initially meet him, Two Bit is a true, loyal friend who wants a family to call his own.
Two Bit was brought to our attention after a good Samaritan found him waiting outside the door of an empty motel room. He was abandoned.
Thankfully, the good Samaritan brought him home and was able to reach out to us.
Although his face looks very much like a chihuahua, he is an interesting mix, weighing approximately 20 pounds with long legs. Two Bit is still pending medical work but appears to be healthy overall. He will need a dental and bloodwork before he's officially adopted.
Two Bit does well with other dogs and would do well in a home with another dog his size or smaller. He has made friends in his foster home and can be playful. He's excellent on a leash and loves to be near people. Two Bit is estimated to be between 10-12 years old.

Baxter
Baxter is one of our long-term adoptable dogs. While he doesn’t have an official diagnosis, he does have a neurological disorder that causes him to spin in circles. He is also blind in one eye. Our best guess is that Baxter has mild hydrocephalus. At this stage in his life, he does not require medication and has wonderful quality of life.

Baxter has been with us for THREE years!!! He’s currently living in a foster home where he is an only dog. He LOVES being an only dog but does well with other dogs. Ideally, he would be adopted into a home without other dogs. He loves a quiet home. However, a home that has 1-2 dogs will be fine for Baxter if the other dogs are mellow.

*Baxter is six years old, is approximately 40 pounds & has the magical ability to melt hearts. If you’re looking for a best friend, you will find it in Baxter!
*Eager to please
*Crate-trained but does well when left free in the house
*Good with cats
*Loves to sleep on a bed near you, but is content wherever he is when he’s in a calm home.
*Enjoys slow walks
*Makes eye contact with the people in his life to show that he’s a good boy It’s how he captures hearts

Baxter will need someone in his life that will continue our work of managing his veterinary care. It’s necessary to keep track of his neurological & physical health, at least one wellness exam per year that includes bloodwork. Homes with children are OK but 12+ years or older. A low-key home that’s not very busy would suit Baxter best! Baxter still needs help and patience with potty training.

Theo
After being rescued from a hoarding situation, Theo has warmed up quickly in his foster home! This little guy has so much personality! It’s wonderful watching him seek attention and wanting to cuddle. He is an adorable senior pup who is full of love and energy!
Theo has a lot of love to give, and he’s looking for a human companion who can give him the love and care he deserves. He is a smart and curious dog who can be playful but also enjoys a good snuggle on the couch. Theo enjoys walks but still needs training on how to walk on a leash.

Theo’s echocardiogram showed that he is asymptomatic but has significant heart enlargement due to valve issues. He is on vet medin and furosemide to slow the onset of heart failure. He’ll need both medications for the rest of his life.

Addy
A special thank you to Lorraine H for fostering Addy. Her dedication to a dog that isn’t potty trained with many medical needs is invaluable. Fostering a dog with medical needs can be challenging, but it also has its rewards, knowing you’re the one making a positive difference in their life.

Lily
Lily is a beacon of sweetness and gentleness, a senior lady who embodies love and companionship. At 14, she’s a quiet and submissive soul, not a barker. She loves the great outdoors, preferring to spend her days exploring the property and sleeping under the trees.Lily delights in playing this game of teasing chickens and squirrels sometimes, but her age and gentle nature show that she’s content with just trotting a few steps and watching them flock up and play. She’s a joy to have around and has seamlessly become part of the pack. She prefers the outdoors and loves to have her people outdoors with her, shadowing them around everywhere. She is so easy to please, and so content. She says thank you with the nudge to give a tiny kiss and for an *atta girl*. In the late afternoon, she’ll nap on her foster mom’s bed before returning to enjoying the great outdoors. She also loves chasing close balls, taking in all the sights and smells, and taking leisurely walks. Her thick, fluffy coat requires brushing to keep her looking and feeling her best. She also requires supervision when outside as she tends to eat nonfood items. Lily is on vetmedin and a joint supplement. The vetmedin is a heart medication that she will need for the rest of her life and the joint supplement will also be needed for the rest of her life.Lily is a true gem and an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the power of love and companionship.

River
River is officially available for adoption!

She is a German Shepherd who is roughly 6-8 years old. When she joined Green Heart Rescue, she was severely underweight, malnourished, and struggled with alopecia due to her skin allergies.
River has been with her Green Heart Rescue foster family for the past two months now. She is THRIVING and makes a wonderful addition to their home. She is house-trained and can be left alone in the house for 4-6 hours at a time. She does exceptionally well with her foster dog sister and would be very happy to end up in a home with other dogs in the future.
As far as cats, she gets along well with them, but she is tempted to chase them when she sees them outside. She’s also very shy with new people but turns into a total lovebug when she starts to feel comfortable. She is sweet and friendly, but due to her shy nature, she would prefer to be in a home with adults and older dog-savvy children only.
Currently, River is working on her basic obedience training and knows how to *sit* using a hand signal. She’s very treat-motivated and eager to learn. She is learning how to walk on a leash. She doesn’t pull when she’s on a leash, but she likes to try to dance circles around whoever is walking her.
River has a medium energy level. She loves to go on regular hikes and walks, but she’s also happy to curl up and have the occasional lazy day at home.
She still has skin allergies, and we are working to find the root cause. Right now, she’s on a salmon-sweet potato food that she seems to be doing well with, and she takes allergy medication to help with her symptoms on her bad days. We think that her allergies will continue to improve with a healthy lifestyle and some more time. Her fur has grown back beautifully in the last few weeks and her symptoms are very mild at this point. She has gained 25 pounds since we pulled her from the Downey shelter, weighing 75 pounds today.

After a long and difficult journey, River is officially ready to find her forever family.

Benny
Information on Benny will be coming soon.

Milo
Milo is in a board and training program with Valor K9
Academy. When we pulled Milo from Downey shelter in November 2024, he was isolated from other dogs and the public for approximately two months. We quickly learned that Milo suffered from extreme separation anxiety, especially in any type of confined area and also struggled with resource guarding, which escalated to biting. Milo has made tremendous progress since we pulled him from the shelter and placed him in training. We are so proud of him and love this boy so much.
Milo’s ideal owner is:
-
Calm, confident, and assertive
-
Understands dog behavior and knows when to step in and give a correction (of course we’ll help with this, but a natural ability to ‘trust your gut’ will help!)
-
Wants to give Milo leadership
-
Has no other dogs or a dog that’s calm-assertive and not insecure
-
Has no kids or is willing to crate him when grandkids come over
-
Enjoys long walks or hikes in the woods so Milo can get exercise and be a happy, fulfilled dog
-
Milo is doing really well with new handlers, around new dogs, with food, and more! His resource guarding is almost ZERO. The muzzle is just a precaution with new handlers. Normally he wears no muzzle or just a gentle leader.
